SR-22 and FR-44 filings on your insurance
You’ve received a letter from the DMV stating that they now require you to file and SR-22 or FR-44 on your next auto policy. You find yourself thinking “What does this mean?”. Don’t worry, we can explain these filings for you.
What is an SR-22?
An SR-22, or sometimes referred to as SR-22 insurance, is a filing that is required for drivers who have had their licenses suspended due to driving without insurance. This filing is a certificate of financial responsibility that ensures that you will meet Virginia’s state minimum insurance requirements for a specified amount of time. Typically, this period is 3 years. This certificate is shared between the DMV and the company that the insured has insurance through. If the insured has a lapse of coverage during the period in which they are required to carry the SR-22, the insurance company will notify the DMV, which could result in the DMV fining the insured, as well as suspending their license again.
What is an FR-44?
Similar to an SR-22, an FR-44 is a filing that is required for drivers who have had their licenses suspended due to a driving under the influence conviction, driving while the license has been forfeited for a conviction, or because of a violation of the provisions of any federal law or law of any other state or any valid local ordinance similar to the prior. This certificate of financial responsibility ensures that you will meet twice the Virginia state minimum insurance requirements. An FR-44 requires that you carry the filing for 3 years after your license revocation is over, or 4 years if your license is returned as “restricted”. This certificate is shared between the DMV and the insurance company the driver is insured with. If the insured has a lapse of coverage during the period in which they are required to carry the FR-44, the insurance company will notify the DMV, which could result in the DMV fining the insured, as well as suspending their license again.
